NHSS 12D Training Pathway
Our structured training pathway provides a clear route from entry-level to advanced operative and supervisory roles.
Step 1: TTMBC – Temporary Traffic Management Basic Course (Classroom)
The essential entry point to NHSS 12D. This half-day classroom course covers the fundamentals of temporary traffic management, traffic control systems, health and safety, and Chapter 8 compliance.

Validity: 6 months (must progress to further training within this period)
Step 2: Airlock Gate Person Installer (Classroom)
Follows TTMBC. This classroom course provides specialist certification for controlled access operations and secure site entry management.

Validity: 5 years from course completion
Step 3: T1/T2 Training (Classroom)
12D T1/T2 classroom training and test. Covers essential skills and operational requirements for single carriageway works and static works including positive traffic control.

Status: Trainee

Validity: 2 years from course completion

Prerequisite: TTMBC
Step 4: M1/M2 RTMO (On-Site Assessment)
Achieved after successful on-site assessments following T1/T2 trainee status. This is the core operative level for NHSS 12D static works.

Status: Registered Traffic Management Operative (RTMO)

Validity: 5 years

Prerequisite: T1/T2 Training
Higher Modules (M3, M4, M5, M6)
Once M1/M2 RTMO status is achieved, the following modules can be completed in any order based on operational need and experience.
M3 – Dual Carriageways (Restricted to 40mph or Less)
Optional module for RTMOs. Covers dual carriageway works restricted to 40mph or less. Does not include contraflow works.

M4 – Convoy Working
Optional module for RTMOs. Covers convoy operations on all road categories excluding motorways.

Prerequisite: M1/M2 RTMO

Validity: 5 years
M5 – Multi-Phase Traffic Signals
Optional module for RTMOs. Covers installation and operation of multi-phase and pedestrian traffic signals.

Training: T5 classroom (1 day) plus centre-based and live on-site assessments

Prerequisite: M1/M2 RTMO

Validity: 5 years
M6 – Supervisor (RLTMO)
For RTMOs progressing to Registered Lead Traffic Management Operative (RLTMO) status. Covers all categories of TTM systems under 12D, team leadership, site audits, and compliance oversight.

Prerequisite: M1/M2 RTMO (including Unit 7)

Validity: 5 years
M7 – Managers and Client Officers
Designed for personnel who do not physically set out traffic management but have TTM responsibilities, including designers, surveyors, inspectors, and client managers.

Mandatory for: Technical Officers and TTM Managers

Recommended for: All managers with TTM responsibilities
