NHSS 12D Course Pathway & Details
Boyle Highways TM Limited, in partnership with KX Safety Limited (Lantra Training Provider No. 4871), delivers the full suite of NHSS 12D training modules for temporary traffic management operatives, supervisors, and clients. All courses are designed to meet the requirements of Chapter 8, the Street Works Code of Practice, and UK highways regulations.
Course Pathway & Order of Completion
TTMBC – Temporary Traffic Management Basic Course
Entry point for all new operatives
- Content: Health & safety, legal duties, basic traffic management principles, signage, hazard awareness
- Duration: 1 day (classroom)
- Assessment: Written and practical
- Outcome: Foundation for all further NHSS 12D modules
12D T1/T2 – Static Works on Single/Dual Carriageways
For new operatives
- Content: Setting up and removing static TM on single (T1) and dual carriageways (T2), equipment, risk assessment, pedestrian safety
- Duration: 1 day (classroom)
- Assessment: Written and practical
- Outcome: Progression to on-site M1/M2 assessment
12D M1/M2 – On-Site Assessments for T1/T2
For operatives progressing from T1/T2
- Content: Demonstrate TM setup/removal on live sites
- Assessment: Minimum 3 on-site assessments (minimum 2-week intervals)
- Outcome: Full operative status (M1/M2), eligible for advanced modules
12D M3 – Static Works on Low-Speed Dual Carriageways
For operatives with M1/M2
- Content: TM for low-speed dual carriageways, signage, safety, managing higher traffic volumes
- Duration: 1 day (classroom)
- Assessment: 3 on-site assessments
- Outcome: Certified for low-speed dual carriageway TM
12D M4 – Convoy Working
For operatives with M1/M2
- Content: Planning and running convoy systems, queue management, safety at ≤10mph, equipment, compliance with Chapter 8
- Duration: 1 day (classroom)
- Assessment: 1 on-site assessment
- Outcome: Certified for convoy working
12D M5 – Multi-Phase Traffic Signals
For operatives with M1/M2
- Content: Installing/removing multi-phase signals, phasing, timing, fault-finding, pedestrian/cyclist safety
- Duration: 1 day (classroom)
- Assessment: 2 on-site assessments (2-week intervals)
- Outcome: Certified for multi-phase signals
12D M6 – Registered Lead Traffic Management Operative (RLTMO)
For experienced operatives with M1/M2
- Content: Supervising complex TM, incident management, site leadership, planning, Red Book compliance
- Duration: 2 days (classroom)
- Assessment: Written and practical
- Outcome: Eligible to act as site lead (RLTMO)
12D M7 – Client/Manager Training
For clients, managers, supervisors (no operative modules required)
- Content: Overview of NHSS 12D modules, legal framework, client/manager responsibilities, planning, risk assessment, documentation, quality assurance, auditing, incident investigation, communication, public and environmental safety
- Duration: 2 days (classroom)
- Assessment: Written/practical, sometimes portfolio-based
- Outcome: Certified to oversee, audit, and manage NHSS 12D TM operations as a client or manager (not operative status)
